The first session is an opportunity for me to get to know you and what you hope to gain from counselling. It’s collaborative and designed to help you feel safe and supported from the start. We can take things as slowly as you like, or dive right in.
Sometimes I will ask a lot of questions, and other times, clients take the lead and share what feels most important to them. Outside of a few questions I ask everyone to assess for safety, there is no one-size-fits all approach to an intake session.
You will have the opportunity to review and sign informed consent documents prior to our session, but I will still review some important elements of informed consent prior to beginning our time together.

One of the most important factors in successful therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. If you feel heard, have a sense of trust in me and the therapeutic process, and are comfortable to share vulnerablly in our sessions, there is a good chance our sessions will be impactful. For some folks, it takes time to get to this place, and that is to be expected, especially if we have a history of relational hurt and trauma. However, you might find you are able to get a sense of this potential through. a consultation call.
If you are new to therapy and not quite sure what you are looking for, I recommend booking a few consultation calls with different counsellors and seeing what feels right. You might feel a “click” or at least been drawn to someone. Listen to your gut, and know you are not alone if you find the process of finding the right person overwhelming. If I don’t feel like the right fit for you, I might be able to refer you to someone else, so please don’t hesitate to ask.

It depends on your goals and situation. Some people come for a handful of sessions focused on a specific issue, while others choose to do longer-term work to explore patterns and build lasting change. We’ll check in regularly to make sure therapy is moving in the direction you want.
Research supports people benefit most from weekly or bi-monthly sessions. If you face financial constraints to regular sessions, please let me know and we can discuss sliding scale or other options.
